Welcome to Module 1 of the biobased construction training.

    _____________________________________________________________________________

As an architect, you are the key player in the design and construction process. The greater your knowledge, the easier it is to fulfill this central, leading role.

In this module, you will learn about the (international) framework, how to leverage your role as a catalyst, how to influence choices and processes, and the knowledge and tools you need to successfully implement biobased construction.

Learning Objectives: In this module, we will guide you through:

    • The (inter)national frameworks and agreements surrounding CO₂ reduction and future-proof construction.

    • The role and influence of the architect and how this differs within the biobased process.

    • The most important systems, regulations, and calculation methods (such as the MPG).

    • The arguments and tools to influence the choice for biobased construction.

    • An analysis of how planning, team composition, and requesting information change with biobased construction.

    Time: ± 90 minutes.

    Target audience: Architects and designers.

Module 1 – The Architect as a Driving Force Content

    • As an architect, you are the key player in the process. In this module, you will learn how to take on that role to achieve success. You will gain insight into the essential knowledge and competencies needed to steer the design and construction process in the right direction.

    • This part of the Building Balance training focuses on the theoretical foundations of biobased design and explores where relevant data can be found and how it can be applied in practice.

The sessions cover the key principles of biobased construction, material properties, and design implications, combined with insights into data sources that support evidence-based design choices. Participants will learn how to interpret and use available data (in HD and 4K formats where applicable) to strengthen their design approach and communicate effectively with clients and partners.

    • This section of the Building Balance training explores The New Normal in architecture and construction — a shift toward circular, nature-based, and low-impact design practices.

Participants will gain insight into how biobased design fits within this broader transition and what this means for future design standards, materials, and collaboration models. The module combines theoretical frameworks with high-definition (HD / 4K) visual examples to illustrate how the principles of The New Normal are shaping the built environment.

    • This module focuses on formulating a clear ambition and vision for biobased design within your architectural practice or organization.

Participants will learn how to translate sustainability goals into a concrete and inspiring vision that guides design choices and project strategies. The session helps define what biobased design means for your firm, how ambitious you want to be, and how to communicate that vision effectively to clients, partners, and stakeholders.
